AoBBA set to continue test piece link with Hammonds

Hammonds" title=

Following the success of their recent joint test-piece preview event, the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators and Hammonds Band have told 4BR that they are now looking forward to three partnership previews prior to the Spring Festival, British Open and Cheltenham National Finals.

Develop

Speaking on behalf of of AoBBA, David Hirst commented: "AoBBA has traditionally organised its own preview evenings, but we're delighted to now be working closely with Hammonds Band to develop the concept over a number of events"

Each event will aim to give constructive feedback to bands from each section from an AoBBA adjudicator before each contest, with the success of the initiative already shown when AoBBA secretary, Nicholas Garman recently worked alongside Huddersfield & Ripponden, Lindley and Hammonds.

Benefit

His written feedback and discussion with the conductors saw a focus on elements that benefited the development of performances in the lead up to the Yorkshire Area contest in Huddersfield, with Nicholas telling 4BR: "A public performance of a test-piece is worth several rehearsals as it replicates, to some extent, the pressures players will face on the contest stage."

Heaton's Partita gains long overdue symphonic revival

Wifrd Heaton" title=

Wilfred Heaton's only completed work for full symphony orchestra is to be performed for the first time since it was completed in 1950.

The premiere on 1st May will be given in Jena, Germany, by the city's Philharmonic Orchestra led by conductor Phillipe Bach, in a concert that unites a symphony orchestra and a brass band on the stage of Jena's historic Volkhaus.

Brainchild

This particular concept of combining brass and orchestra is the brainchild of Alexander Richter, musical director of Brass Band BelchKLANG, who told 4BR: "The 'Brass & Sinfonik' format started in 2011 led by Roman Sacher Brogli and myself.

Four years later Phillipe Bach and I followed with 'Brass & Sinfonik II', for which we commissioned a new work for brass band and orchestra, 'At the Crossroads', by Oliver Waespi as well as a performance of Arthur Butterworth's Overture 'Mancunians'."

Joint performances

He added: "Because of Oliver's composition, there was increasing interest in the brass band scene and the concert was again sold out."

Phillipe and Alexander have given the concert the title, 'BlechKLANGPhilharmonie' and will see an all-English first half marking the centenary of the birth of Heaton (1918 — 2000) with his signature march 'Praise' played by Brass Band BlechKLANG.

The Jena Philharmonic strings will then join the band for a joint performance of John Ireland's 'A Downland Suite' (1932), in which the strings play the 'Prelude' and 'Minuet', in Geoffrey Bush's transcription, and the band takes the 'Elegy' and final 'Rondo'. Heaton's 'Partita' ends the first half.

Heaton was 31 when he composed it, although the bulk of what he had written until then was intended for the Salvation Army. However, much of the band pieces he finished on his return from war service were considered too advanced in style and difficult for Salvationist use, so he began to explore other avenues for his creative impulse.

Modelled on the symphonic music of William Walton and Sibelius, 'Suite for Orchestra Partita' is a highly accomplished as well as personal work, particularly in the biting bitonality of its 'Scherzo' and the intense lyricism of the 'Canzona'.

Without any prospect of a performance, Heaton re-purposed it on no fewer than three occasions; first as a shorter brass band test-piece in 1950, secondly as an epic virtuoso Piano Sonata, and finally in 1984 when 'Partita' was produced for Howard Snell and Desford Band.

Quietly delighted

The orchestral material has been prepared and edited for the premiere by Heaton's respected biographer Paul Hindmarsh, who told 4BR: "I think Wilfred would be surprised, but quietly delighted, that the original of 'Partita' is being exhumed from what he called his 'unregarded corner'.

I remember him telling me how old fashioned he thought it was, but like all the best music, it has genuine 'staying power'.

Wilfred had not written for orchestra before, but you would never know. The scoring is impeccable.

He made the work a little more intense in places when he came to revise it in 1984, but I decided only to update the original with pencil additions Wilfred wrote on the orchestral score; so those who know the band version will hear differences from time to time."

Bach and Bach

Paul added: "Given that his favourite composer was J.S. Bach, I'm sure that having a 'Bach' conduct the performance in a town just a short train journey away from the great master's home town, Eisenach, and the cities in which he created his finest music, Weimar and Leipzig, would have brought a smile to his face."

Also included in the concert will be performances Rimsky-Korskov's 'Procession of the Nobles', Mussorgsky's 'Prelude to the opera 'Khovanchina' and joint rendition sof 'Polovtsian Dances' and Tchaikovsky's '1812 Overture'.

The members of the Gloucestershire Youth Brass Band will enjoy a musical experience of a lifetime later this year when they take to the stage to perform alongside the incredible American trumpet player Wynton Marsalis.

They will also be joined by members of the Gloucestershire Youth Jazz Combo and advanced brass and percussion players to combine for what is promised to be a truly fabulous evening of music making at Cheltenham Town Hall on Saturday 13th July.

Honoured

Steven Legge, the Extended Learning & Provisions Manager or Gloucestershire Music told 4BR: "We are both honoured and delighted to be given this opportunity to perform alongside ten 'Brass for Africa' musicians and the incredible Wynton Marsalis this July.

Our thanks go to Artistic Director Alison Balsom and the Cheltenham Music Festival for this awesome opportunity."

Ireland enjoys Phoenix experiences

Although they didn't quite manage to claim a qualification place for Cheltenham at the Second Section Area Championship in Bedworth on the weekend, Ireland Colliery Chesterfield certainly enjoyed their 'Rise of the Phoenix' musical experience.

Ahead of their appearance in Bedworth the band turned up to rehearsal to find a massive phoenix of their own flying high above their heads.

Mythical birds

In fact there were a number of mythical birds spotted — with the flock kindly donated by Sheffield Carnival ahead of their own forthcoming appearance at a special phoenix themed parade around Norfolk Park in the city in July.

Karen Bolt, the wife of band conductor Lindon, is a highly respected artist and has been an integral part of the team responsible for the design and construction of the impressive costumes.

And although the band couldn't quite rise from the flames in triumph on this occasion it was a brilliant way to be inspired to play the music.

March " title=

The 13th Morley March & Hymn Tune contest will take place in Morley, West Yorkshire on Sunday 16th June.

The traditional format of the popular event comprises a road march along the pedestrianised Queen Street, followed by each band relocating to a main arena to play a trio of verses of a hymn tune before concluding their programme with a contest march.

Generous prize fund

The competition is open to all bands from Championship to Youth. All the music is own choice, with a generous prize fund with a £600 first prize. The adjudicators will be the experienced duo of David Hirst and Stan Lippeatt.

Proceeds from the contest go to the Morley & District Lions organisation and has the full support of the Mayor of Morley and the Morley Community Development Committee.

Hirst to help keep musical focus on female achievements

Brighouse & Rastrick cornet star Laura Hirst is to be a guest soloist later this year for a concert in association with York International Women's Week.

The assistant principal cornet of the newly crowned Yorkshire Area champion will join 'Femmes Fortissimo' for the event in York on Saturday 13th April.

Strong focus

And although International Women's Day was on the 8th March, concert organiser Kate Lock told 4BR she was delighted that Laura would join them for a concert that keeps a strong focus on women's achievements.

"We couldn't be more delighted to have Laura join us for our concert," she said. "She broke through an all-male 'ceiling' that had stood for over a hundred years.

Even though women are much better represented in banding now, there's still a dearth in some of the higher section bands, and especially among MDs, composers and adjudicators.

We want to encourage women to reach higher, and to draw attention to the contributions they make as musicians. Femmes Fortissimo is about making women's voices heard through brass."

Popular

The April 13th concert is the second outing for the all-women brass band, made up of players from across the north of England. The band originally formed for the 2018 York International Women's Week to mark the centenary of the start of women's suffrage. The concert was so popular that it was decided to do it again.

It was also revealed that the programme will include some historical female reference points, such as 'The March of the Women', composed by Ethyl Smyth for the Suffragette movement.

There will also be a performance of 'The Lost Chord' to celebrate cornetist Daisy Squelch who famously played the piece before the announcement of the results at the 1905 National Championships at Crystal Palace, having earlier challenged any other lady cornetist £500 to play against her.

Even better

Kate added: "We've already got 46 players signed up, so this is going to be ever bigger that last time. And with Laura Hirst joining us to play some solos, it's going to be even better."

Schoonnhoven " title=

Brass Band Schoonhoven comfortably ensured their top flight credentials for their national federation's requirements by gaining to a commanding 92.5 points out of 100 in a Concert Division festival event held at the De Lawei in Drachten.

The obligatory event sees bands compete once every four years by providing a concert performance showcasing their standard, with performers having to secure over 85 points to maintain their grading.

Forgotten Brass

Under the baton of their new conductor Robbert Vos, Schoonhoven provided a programme entitled 'Forgotten Brass' with works by Wilfred Heaton, Eric Ball, Derek Bourgeois and Gilbert Vinter.

Robbert told 4BR: "In the current brass band climate, individual musicality seems to be secondary to sheer technique so I wanted to show that wasn't the case.

I also wanted to celebrate composers who have brought their unique musical voice to our movement."

Programme

Brass Band Schoonhoven opened with Heaton's 'Toccata — Oh the Blessed Lord' and followed it with Eric Ball's 'Journey into Freedom'. Derek Bourgeois' imposing 'Concerto for Bass Trombone' featured soloist Rommert Groenhof before the band rounded off their programme with Gilbert Vinter's 'Spectrum'.

Peggy Tomlinson is literally enjoying putting her feet up at last following her final appearance as Yorkshire Regional Secretary.

Soon after she led another superbly organised event at Huddersfield Town Hall she went into hospital for a knee replacement operation.

Peggy then returned home with husband Malcolm to find that she had been inundated with best wishes and get well cards as well as flowers from brass band supporters who wanted to thank her for her years of sterling service to the Yorkshire banding movement.

"I couldn't believe the reception I was given at the Championships," she told 4BR as she admitted that she was relaxing with a bag of frozen peas on her knee.

"It's been a privilege to serve Yorkshire banding, but to receive a standing ovation was very humbling. It was so unexpected and it meant such a great deal."

Not lost

Peggy will not be lost to the movement however, as she intends to offer her help in any way possible for as long as she can.

"I've got a new knee now, so I've been told to keep active. The contest is wonderful hands, so I will be delighted to offer any help or advise that they want.

I will also be in Cheltenham to support the Yorkshire bands with my flag ready to wave if we can add some more National titles."

Geneva Group increases DNA profile

Geneva" title=

4BR has been told that 2019 is to be a year of opportunity and innovation for the Geneva Group as they announce the opening of a new chapter in their development.

It comes with AMATI-Denak, as the Geneva Group becomes the proud owners of an iconic brand and custodians of one of the most historic centres of brass and woodwind instrument making in the world.

Cradles

Brass and woodwind instrument making first appeared in the Czech city of Kraslice as far back as the 17th century. Lying on the border of Vogtland in Saxony it has long been regarded as one of the cradles of European musical instrument making.

In the 18th century, developments in orchestral music saw the area flourish with renowned craftsmen producing wind instruments in addition to violins, whilst a desire to innovate in the 19th century saw great technical improvements with the makers of Kraslice becoming increasingly in demand for their expertise.

In 1840, the first bespoke musical instrument factory in Kraslice was set up and by the end of the 19th century 11 more followed, employing around 300 people, with an infrastructure of sellers, merchants and retailers springing up alongside them.

World renowned

Later, in the Czech town of Hradec Kralove, V.F.Cerveny was founded — becoming world renowned for its invention of what became known as the Wagner tuba, whilst the 20th century heralded almost 60 manufacturers moving to the area in and around in Kraslice.

Companies such as Bohland & Fuchs, Huller & Co., AK Huttl, Julius Keilworth, Karl Puchner, Adolf Rolz and A.Kohlert were established as major employers in the region and soon after the end of the Second World War the AMATI-Denak cooperative consisting of several of these musical instrument makers was founded and the name of AMATI was born.

A little later V.F.Cerveny was affiliated to AMATI and in 1993 the company was privatised and received the suffix, Denak, which simply means 'wind instruments Kraslice'.

Legendary

Today that history and tradition remains as strong as ever as the Geneva Group honours and is inspired by those legendary forefathers.

The current factory building now combines the skills of approximately world class 250 employees, accompanied in their work by the scent of processed wood and the sounds of hammered brass permeating the air.

4BR was informed that Geneva Group is proud to have brought together generations of talent and expertise with modern production techniques and technology to produce instruments of passion, dedication and artistic professionalism.

Dreamed

Speaking to 4BR, CEO Tim Oldroyd, the founder and owner of Geneva Instruments said it was always a dream of his to link his own passion to a historic centre of excellence. "I've always dreamed of having world class instruments built in a world class factory by world class craftsmen and women.

That's why in 2015 the Geneva Group bought the AMATI factory because I was convinced that history has shown that the best instruments in the world were built there."

He added: "The acquisition has laid down the foundation for the further development and innovation of AMATI-Denak affiliated companies and brands. AMATI-Denak is now part of Geneva Group (England), which includes Geneva Instruments, Oldroyd Cardinal, OW Lineage, V.F. Cerveny, AMATI, Boosey & Hawkes (Musical Instruments), Bohland & Fuchs and many more.

It proves our ethos of innovation through lineage. It's in our DNA."

Financial boost from Kerwin legacy

kERWIN" title=

Tabby Kerwin, wife of the late Simon Kerwin, has revealed that bands and brass musicians have received a discretionary financial boost courtesy of her late husband's wishes.

Thrive

Tabby told 4BR: "As a true musician, Simon didn't conform to the banding 'norm'. He was an advocate of the music coming first.

He also had more knowledge and musical integrity than anyone I've known and he wanted to see the bands, friends and that colleagues that reflected his own ethos, thrive."

Tabby continued: "I've been delighted to make discretionary legacy gifts in Simon's name to bands that we both felt would benefit from the investment and also as a 'thank you' for the impact those bands and individuals had on him.

Simon would always do everything he could to help others and I'm delighted that even after his death, he can continue to help others."

Website launch

In making the donations, Tabby announced that to coincide with the launch of the new Mode for…Publishing website in the Spring, five bands who are investing their energies into setting-up training and youth bands can also benefit from free music written by Simon.

She added: "I'm offering five bands the opportunity to receive 40 pieces of excellent beginner and training band music worth over £300 and which was cleverly designed by Simon in multi parts.

Mode for… Four or More! has 20 pieces based on four parts provided in Bb, Eb and F plus an optional play-along part for the teacher or 'stars' in your brass group. Mode for… Band! also has 20 pieces based on a ten player multi-part system in various interchangeable pitches, with more advanced parts for developing players and trainers."

Applications

Applications for the free music is open to those with existing bands or bands that are making plans to set-up a new training or youth band initiative.

Tabby concluded: "As the person who set-up a music academy system in New Zealand, Simon was keen to see the same thing put in place in the UK to encourage investment in youth musicians.

Hopefully, this music will help bands by providing a complete concert programme's worth of music without the burden of the cost."

Get in touch

Applications can be made by emailing Tabby at with a letter of no more than 500 words with the plans and desires for your band's development and training initiatives.

Applications close on 1st May 2019.

4BR has been informed that preparations are already well underway in New Zealand for the 139th National Championships which are due to take place in the historic city of Hamilton from 10th to 14th July.

Vinter

It has been announced that as 2019 is the 110th anniversary of the birth of Gilbert Vinter and the 50th anniversary of his death, the competitors in the A and B Grade sections will perform 'Variations on a Ninth' and 'Triumphant Rhapsody' respectively as the set-works.

'Variations on a Ninth' was written in 1964, for the National Championship of Great Britain — the duality of its inspiration in typical Vinter fashion being the interval of an initial ninth (although soon expanded to a resonant 13th), which is worked into a series of nine inventive variations — including a famous set of cadenzas for soprano, horn, baritone and euphonium — later followed by the cornet.

It has remained a popular work — and was utilised as the test-piece at the British Open in 1981, the Swiss National Championship in 1986 and the Grand Shield in 1996.

'Triumphant Rhapsody' was written in 1965 and also used at the National Final. Also inspired by musical intervals — it was originally to be called 'A Matter of Seconds' although Vinter was asked to rename it, despite its inventive use of both seconds and sevenths throughout.

It has subsequently been used at events around the world; from the Australian, Belgian and Netherlands Championships to own-choice selections at the European Championships. It is also to be used as the set-work for the 2019 Senior Trophy.

Both pieces have been used as set-works at the New Zealand Championships in 1965 and 1966.

Dobson and Chaulk

In the other sections of competition, Simon Dobson's evocative 'Penlee' has been selected for the C Grade, and as a tribute to the late David Chaulk, his reflective work 'Meditation on St Clement' will be performed by bands in the D Grade.

The chief adjudicator for the five-day contest will be the renowned Belgian musician, educator and conductor Dr Luc Vertommen who will make his first visit to the country to experience its rich brass banding culture and welcome.

The assistant chief adjudicator is Major Graham Hickman, Director of Music of the New Zealand Army Band

A spokesperson told 4BR: "It has been 40 years since the championships were last held in the city and the local band and its wider community is very much looking forward to this event."

Following a recent BBC Wales news article story that the famous Llangollen Male Choir was facing an uncertain future, the Lewis Merthyr Band contacted them to offer help with their revival plans.

Reached out

Conductor Craig Roberts told 4BR: "After reading of the choir's plight, we reached out and invited them to join us in concert. We have always embraced working successfully with choirs (above).

We were delighted when they accepted and we will now travel north to combine our appearance at the Welsh Regional Championships in Wrexham with a great concert the following day with them in Llangollen."

Following the report of the choir's situation, which has echoes of the problems faced by many bands in Wales, a new conductor and accompanist have joined.

Vital

Craig added: "It's vital we protect our musical heritage — vocal as well as brass. We're delighted to join together on a weekend when there will be spotlight in North Wales on brass banding and help them in their efforts to rejuvenate an essential part of community based artistic life.

Let's hope that a similar resurgence can be witnessed in parts of the banding movement in Wales, and if anyone in the Llangollen or surrounding area might be considering membership of the choir, we would wholeheartedly encourage them to do so."

The Llangollen Choir was formed by six local men in 1981, and rose to perform at venues including the Royal Albert Hall.
